Work-life balance. What are the EU's interventions?

Genova / IT

Gender equality is a fundamental principle of the EU, but women are still underrepresented in the labour market and in leadership positions. This project focuses on promoting a more equal distribution of caring responsibilities between men and women in order to improve the work-life balance.

The project also addresses EU Directive 2019/1158, which sets minimum standards for reconciling work and family life. Although it is the result of compromises, it represents an important step forward for gender equality.

The project will discuss the role of social partners in the implementation of the Directive, national approaches and tools for implementation, successful policies that promote work-life balance and suggestions for good practice that can be shared internationally. Examples such as Italy's legislative initiative show how national policies can promote equality and the sharing of caring responsibilities.

The aim of the project is to strengthen social dialogue between social partners in the above-described field, as this is essential to improve the working situation, protect workers' rights and promote economic growth and social cohesion.

The project emphasises the relevance of equality and reconciliation for structuring the common good.
