Old age insurance: fair pension opportunities for women

Brixen / IT

Despite progress in reducing the pay gap between women and men, the gender pension gap still receives too little attention. On average, women in the EU receive 26% less pension than men, which is often due to shorter employment histories, part-time work and family-related interruptions. In addition, the horizontal and vertical segregation of the labour market, low wages in female-dominated sectors and lower recognition of social professions have a negative impact on women's pension entitlements.

The project aims to identify the causes and effects of this pension gap and discuss possible solutions. Measures such as recognising parental and caring leave, promoting career development despite family responsibilities and making parental leave more attractive for fathers are seen as crucial steps. At the same time, tax and social policy regulations that keep women out of the labour market or make it difficult for them to return should be reconsidered.

Expert reports and international practical examples are intended to provide participants with impetus to address the pension gap politically and socially to a greater extent. A strategic rethink is called for at EU level and in the member states in order to combat old-age poverty among women through systemic reforms. In particular, the project aims to mobilise trade unions and other workers’ organisations as well as social associations to exert political pressure on governments and the European Commission to achieve long-term improvements for women of retirement age.
