According to Eurostat, 54% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the EU consider the lack of qualified workers to be one of their most pressing problems. There is a growing awareness that education and training content must be better aligned with labour market needs to ensure a continuous supply of appropriately skilled workers.
The aim of the project is to share good practice in the field of further training and retraining, including initiatives within trade unions. Companies are increasingly recognising that they need different management skills and organisational skills in today's complex environment than they had in the past. This also applies to trade unions, which need to prepare for a generational change in leadership. It is therefore important to develop a sustainable system for training and acquiring skills for young trade union leaders.
Across Europe, trade unions are weakening. However, with young, educated and skilled trade union leaders, there is hope for a revival of the trade union movement. Trade unions can support the process of upskilling and reskilling of workers through social dialogue.
Valuable social dialogue requires well trained new trade union leaders; these new leaders, who are in touch with current economic changes, are more competent negotiators.
