This project focuses on the challenges faced by cross-border workers in the EU, highlighting significant differences in labour laws, wages, taxation, social security, and benefits between Member States. Despite the free movement of goods and people, these disparities create inequalities that affect workers living and working across borders. The seminar will explore the potential of Euro-cities, using the Elvas-Badajoz-Campomaior axis as an example, to promote social development and address depopulation in border regions. It will also examine how trade unions can collaborate to reduce confusion in the application of labour laws and better represent cross-border workers.
The seminar aims to foster cooperation among trade unions from neighbouring countries and regions to improve the defence of workers' rights across borders. It will explore experiences from European regions with significant cross-border worker activity and discuss how Euro-cities can address the challenges faced by individuals moving between two jurisdictions. The project will also consider whether unions should strengthen their independent efforts or rely more on transnational collaboration.
This project addresses the fragmented nature of labour legislation across the EU and explores how bilateral agreements between neighbouring countries can provide better protection for cross-border workers. These experiences can contribute to the development of EU-wide legislation to improve social dialogue and harmonize labour standards.
