European elections 2024 and beyond: European democracy and the EU’s social dimension at stake

Brussels / BE

All across Europe, there is rising dissatisfaction in society with what are perceived as insufficient political answers to the manifold complex challenges of today. Trust in institutions is decreasing, the tone of political debate is becoming harsher, and social issues are becoming more pressing. Populist movements are gaining increasing favour. Against this back-ground, this year’s EZA Brussels Conference addresses the pressing challenges posed by populism in the EU ahead of the upcoming European elections.
The event will delve into the reasons for the surge of populism, offering projections for the upcoming European elections, and shedding light on potential future implications for national and EU social policies alike. It will also explore the link between the rise of populism and the crisis of industrial democracy, presenting for the first time the results of a new study conducted by EZA and ADAPT. Finally, it aims to showcase the strategic importance of trade unions and workers’ organ-izations in countering extremism in their own ranks and in society at large, illustrating our vision of a more inclusive social Europe.
