Demographic challenge, immigration and sustainability of rural areas in Europe

Málaga / ES

The project focuses on tackling the challenges of an ageing society in Europe and uses migration as a potential solution, particularly to revitalise rural areas and combat depopulation. It promotes a new narrative that sees immigration not as a threat but as an opportunity for economic integration and demographic sustainability.

It examines the role of migration in combating depopulation and ensuring the sustainability of rural areas. It emphasises the importance of targeted training and the use of migrant experience to create economic opportunities in rural areas.

Trade unions and other workers' organisations play an important role in this context by helping to reduce prejudices against migrants and highlighting their positive contribution to labour markets and welfare systems through awareness-raising and training; by supporting the implementation of training programmes to facilitate the integration of migrants into the labour market, especially in rural areas with labour shortages; by contributing to the formulation and implementation of migration policies aimed at equal opportunities and social cohesion. They therefore play a key role in positioning migration as a positive stimulus for economic development and social cohesion in Europe.
