The joint project of USO and MCL deals with the depopulation of rural areas in Europe and focuses on specific population groups and their needs. The focus in 2025 is on the flight of young people from rural areas.
The aims of the project are
- Analysing the reasons why young people migrate, such as a lack of training and employment opportunities and a lack of services that make life in rural areas unattractive.
- Adaptation of educational provision, for example by developing educational programmes that are linked to local employment opportunities, particularly in the primary and secondary sectors.
- Expanding social dialogue to small communities and micro-enterprises to better involve young workers, enable collective bargaining in isolated areas and increase the attractiveness of rural areas.
The project emphasises the importance of a fair distribution of opportunities and services, as called for in the European Pillar of Social Rights and aims to revitalise rural regions by improving prospects for young people and increasing trade union involvement.
