Luxembourg's former Labour Minister Nicolas Schmit is the new designated EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs.
This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the launch of her new commission.The 65-year-old from the Socialist Group is considered an EU expert. From 1998 to 2004 Schmit worked as a Luxembourg ambassador to the EU. He then accepted the position of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration in Luxembourg in the Juncker-Asselborn I Cabinet. In 2009 he took over the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Immigration.
At his own request, the politician retired from national politics in 2018 to prepare for his candidature for the European Union. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019.Schmit is supposed to follow the Christian Democrat Marianne Thyssen from Belgium.In an order letter, Commission President von Leyen asked Schmit, for example, to support a fair minimum wage and to stand up for the working conditions of platform workers.
