In the light of the latest developments and the increased uncertainty about Ukraine's future, we remain more connected than ever with our Ukrainian friends. Their courageous resistance against Russia's aggression with so many deaths, wounded, refugees and untold destruction of cities and villages must not have been fruitless.
The fight for the territorial integrity of their country and the safeguarding of universal values is also a fight for the territorial integrity and values of the whole of Europe. For us, too, they muster the courage every day to stand up for freedom in dignity.
As workers and social organisations, we must realise that this is also about a social struggle and about social cohesion for a dignified life.
At a time when blind self-interest is rearing its head in some people's minds and the agreed alliance is at stake, strong democratic decision-making is in order and it is the duty of the EU and the Member States to show strong leadership. Further humanitarian, political, economic, financial and military support to Ukraine is now more necessary than ever.
We are at a turning point in Europe and in the world. Only together with Ukraine, in full respect for their interests, based on international law and the necessary security guarantees, is a just peace possible. Not over their heads but with them. Words are not enough, solidarity now requires further courageous action.
