Social Cohesion, Demography and Democracy in the EU

Venue not yet defined / PT

The project addresses key political, economic and social challenges facing the EU, including ageing populations, migration, digital and environmental change and the impact of these factors on democracy and social cohesion. It focuses on the EU's economic and social cohesion policy, which aims to combat regional and social inequalities and shape the transition to a sustainable and digital future.

The project addresses the asymmetric impact of the pandemic on EU regions as well as new challenges such as the war in Ukraine, climate change, desertification, demographic change and the enlargement of the EU. Greater regionalisation of cohesion policy is highlighted as key to its effectiveness. The aim of the project is to better educate multipliers from trade unions and other workers’ organisations about the importance of cohesion policy and its role in promoting democracy, employment and social dialogue.

The project offers space for discussion about:

  • The evaluation of cohesion policy in relation to migration and demographic challenges, particularly in southern Europe and Portugal,

  • the future of cohesion policy in the context of digital and environmental change and the European Pillar of Social Rights,

  • The relationship between cohesion policy, democracy and governance, including the promotion of citizen participation, transparency and ethics.

The project aims to enable participants to better assess political developments, to participate more actively in shaping cohesion policy and to strengthen social dialogue at national and European level. It also aims to analyse and promote the participation of trade unions and other workers’ organisations in bodies such as the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Council.
