Safe and healthy work in the digital age

Băile Felix / RO

This project discusses the influence of digitalisation on safety and health at work. Digitalisation can have positive effects by reducing dangerous or unhealthy working conditions through automation, for example by using robots. In sensitive areas such as nuclear power plants or in transport, automation increases safety and reduces occupational accidents. The project aims to analyse the effects of digitalisation on the labour market, industrial relations and health and safety at work.

The following questions will be addressed:

  • To what extent can digitalisation actively contribute to ensuring safe and healthy workplaces?

  • How has the number of work-related accidents in different countries been reduced through digitalisation?

  • What is the role of trade unions in supporting the automation process without jeopardising jobs?

Digitalisation should be used to improve the quality of life of workers. Automation and robotisation are important elements for economic and social development as long as they go hand in hand with an improvement in the quality of life. Trade unions have a responsibility to represent the interests of workers, especially in the context of the replacement of human labour by artificial intelligence, whereby workers' rights must be respected, and safe and healthy workplaces should be guaranteed. Artificial intelligence cannot replace human consciousness.
