Making the European Green Deal work for people

In this report the researchers looked at the role of human development in the green transition

The World Bank is an important international institute and they could certainly look at policy in Europe with a degree of independence. Their findings can inspire us in the social dialogue at company level as well as at regional and national level.

In this report the researchers looked at the role of human development in the green transition to make the European Green Deal work for people. The report offers an analysis of the challenges and the implications for the region.

The starting point for the researchers was that to address this big challenge we will need commitment and buy-in of all, as well that it represents a massive effort to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices.

A human-centered approach will be essential. This means human development policies to help society adapt to a green economy, to train the workforce for greener jobs, to deal with unintended consequences with adverse effects, particularly for low-skilled workers and lagging regions.

The approach needs changes to social protection programs, education and training systems, and health services. Important topics are equipping people with green skills, strengthening labor market conditions, and improving the health sector to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the transition.
