Young leaders - part 2

The training course for “Young leaders” which took place in days 14-18.02.2024 in Lublin (Poland) was the second part of the three planned for the whole course. The first course took place in November/December 2023 in Santarem (organized by our partner – CFTL from Portugal). The third part will take place in October 2024.

This training was attended by 19 representatives of trade unions from Poland, France and Portugal. They also participated in the previous edition. There were also present representatives of the host organization (EDS-FNS) and EZA as a main leader of this course. The course was funded by the European Union.

The training staff were scientists associated with the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Kraków – prof. Jarosław Kucharski and prof. Piotr Duchliński (Department of philosophy).

Workshops about modern social media was led by Grzegorz Zubala - Journalist, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of lublinews.pl Information Portal

The training course has 3 days of 8 hours workshops – together 24 didactic hours. The course was concluded with evaluation session during which everyone was asked to express their opinions about substantive program of the course and suggestions for the future trainings - related to the

MAIN TOPICS 

During this course attention was paid to the following aspects:

  • basic leadership skills.

  • Important role of values in attracting new members of trade unions.

  • proactive ways and methods of attracting new trade union members - use of modern media in the promotion of the trade unions. 

  • getting to know the specifics of social media, the principles of creating content suitable for a given social media and their publication.

  • identity, ethics and values in a leader's work.

  • leader's mission.

  • non-violent communication in the workplace according to theory of M. Rosenberg. 

  • leadership styles and distinguish between a leader and a boss.

METHODS

Trainers led - alongside the lecture style of work - many active methods, exercises and tasks – individual and in the small groups/ pairs. Examples of the tasks:

  • group tower building.

  • group/pair discussion – brainstorming.

  • playing the role of leader and follower during the task of leading another person (who had their eyes closed) around the room.

  • role-playing.

  • video making – individually and in the group. 

  • analysis and discussion of the course of the activity and its results.

  • self-reflection.

CONCLUSIONS, POSTULATES, EFFECTS 

  • Significant role of values – answer to the question “what are our values, what are our roots, what is our mission” – values make trade unions unique and also build the unity which is attractive for potential members.

  • The role of identity and values of a leader – how we can build our position and authority as a leader? Who we see in our lives as a leader (what are his/her main features which make him/her a leader in our eyes).

  • The continuing need to develop leadership skills - listening and negotiating skills, representation skills, persuasive skills, cooperation skills, non – violent communication, identification of goals by the leader and their definition according to the SMART method.

  • Non - violent communication as a way of building healthy relationships in trade unions.

  • The need to improve knowledge about modern ways of promotion in social media; the need of improving the practical skills in virtual world day by day because of changes and technological improvement. 

  • Effective communication with Generation Z – as a task for us as representatives of trade unions; mutual understanding between different generations.
