EZA focus "Youth and labour market"

As a result of the economic crisis, many European countries are facing challenges at a scale never encountered before in order to combat unemployment among young people. The current situation has made it clear how important it is to provide young people with solid job training in order to boost their job opportunities in their own country, and also take advantage of the freedom of movement for workers. Due to the tangible shortage of professional employees that can already be felt in many countries, caused by demographic trends on the one hand and high youth unemployment on the other, the key task is to rethink vocational training as a cornerstone of sustainable employment, identify reform requirements, and consider the current successful ”dual system” training systems, such as those in Austria and Germany, on a Europe-wide level.  The aim is to create and boost an awareness of the value of vocational training for the professional futures of young people in Europe, and to reveal to the players in this field – especially social dialogue partners – the opportunities and limits of vocational training when combating the above challenges. This is of special importance against the background of the European Commission‘s Strategic Objectives to tackle youth unemployment und the lower employment in the EU by means of future-orientated and innovative concepts, as well as the latest idea to introduce a “Youth Guarantee” whereby everyone under the age of 25 would receive a good offer of a job, vocational training or practical experience, or further job training, upon completion of their formal education or upon losing their job.
