The Pope issues an encyclical on social justice

The long-awaited social justice Encyclical from Pope Benedict XVI was published on 7 July 2009, one day before the G8 Summit in L’Aquila. The Pope’s third letter, entitled “Caritas in Veritate” (Love in Truth), in line with the tradition of social teaching of the Catholic Church and deals with questions of social justice, as well as the financial and economic crises. The most important themes are ethical standards and people’s development in the era of globalisation. “‘Caritas in veritate’ deals with the social issues that were described in the encyclical written by my predecessor Paul VI entitled ‘Populorum progressio’, in 1967. My letter delves into some aspects of the general development of our time – in the light of love and truth,” said the Pope one week ago, before the Angelus.

EZA, as a network of Christian-Socialist worker organisations, based on Christian teachings in social matters, feels that the Encyclical endorses its work, since, amongst other things, the Pope spoke of a return to ethical fundamentals, as promoted in EZA’s ethical seminars on the financial and economic crisis. The Encyclical’s content is also mirrored in the dialogue between trades unions and church, which EZA has promoted for many years through a series of seminars.
